ROSETREES 2024 CONTINUATION AWARDS
Aim
The purpose of Rosetrees continuation awards is to offer continued funding for research projects that have shown outstanding progress. Applications must continue research on from a current or recently completed Rosetrees funded project. Applications cannot be for new research projects.
Research proposals should target an unmet clinical need impacting a significant patient population in the UK. Proposals focusing on rare diseases will also be considered if applicants can demonstrate that their research has potential applications to a broader range of clinical conditions.
Key Information
Intermediate grants - Up to £100,000 over 3 years, capped at £34,0000 per year.

Funding
Intermediate Level: Up to £100,000 over 3 years, maximum £34,000 per year. This aims to provide continuation funding for early discovery phase translational research, building on supporting preliminary data. If you are following on from a Seedcorn grant you must apply through this scheme.
Major Level: Up to £210,000 over 3 years, maximum of £70,000 per year.
Major grant funding is intended for more advanced translational research supported by robust supporting data. Projects must demonstrate a realistic potential for clinical translation within 5-10 years.
Continuation grants can be used to fully or partially fund salaries for post-doctoral research associates, research technicians, and research assistants. In exceptional cases, we may consider funding PhD stipends, provided the prospective student is integrated within a larger research programme (e.g., a clinical trial or programme grant) and there is a clear rationale that Rosetrees' support will add significant impact.
Funding may also cover research consumables, sequencing, animal costs, and other reasonable operational expenses (e.g., access costs). While small equipment purchases may be considered, grants cannot be used solely for the purchase of large capital equipment.
Eligiblity
- The principal applicant must be the PI on any of the following:
- an active Rosetrees-funded grant that is within 12 months of completion.
- a Rosetrees-funded grant that has completed in the last 12 months.
- invited to resubmit an application previously entered into this scheme.
- Typically, the principal applicant should hold a tenured position or provide evidence that they will have secured funding for the duration of the grant.
- For major project grants, the principal applicant must be a senior researcher with a PhD (or equivalent), a proven track record in grant management, successful research delivery, and a strong publication history.
Applications
Applications will be considered in two phases. In the first instance, applicants are invited to submit a preliminary application, which will be triaged by our panel. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to submit a full application which will be sent for external peer review.
The continuation funding scheme is highly competitive, so please review the following requirements before submitting an application.
Major Grant Applications
- You can apply for up to £210K over 3 years from Rosetrees, but the application must include an element of matched funding alongside the amount requested from Rosetrees to cover directly incurred costs. This matched funding can come from secured grants or in-kind support. In some instances, we may consider applications with pending matched funding, but any Rosetrees award will be contingent on the confirmation of this funding.
- The focus of major project awards is to support highly translational research with the potential to deliver patient benefits within 5-10 years. Applicants must provide a clear strategy for achieving this goal.
-
Intermediate Grant Applications
While matched funding is not required for intermediate grants, applications with some element of matched funding will be given priority.
Patient Benefit
Rosetrees is dedicated to funding projects that will lead to patient benefit. For major projects, there must be a realistic potential for patient benefit within 5-10 years, supported by a clear strategy for translation. For intermediate projects, Rosetrees can fund earlier-stage translational research, but the application must outline a clear pathway to translation.
Please note, if you are seeking continuation funding following a seedcorn grant, you must apply through the intermediate scheme.
Review Process
-
All applications will undergo an initial eligibility check. Expressions of interest will be evaluated by an internal scientific panel, which will select the most promising submissions to proceed to the next stage. This triage process will consider several factors, including:
-
Outputs from previous Rosetrees-funded grants, with priority given to applications that have resulted in peer-reviewed publications or grants acknowledging Rosetrees as a funder.
-
Other outputs such as publications on preprint servers (with Rosetrees acknowledgment), conference presentations, and patents awarded or applied for.
-
Scientific quality, clinical relevance, the research team's track record, and the potential for further development and clinical translation.
-
-
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full application, which will undergo specialist external review. The highest-scoring applications will be further shortlisted and reviewed by a scientific panel, which will make funding recommendations.
